#13 What I Love About My Job
Trying to distill my job as a commercial director and learning to use my new 3D printer.
I’ve been directing, shooting and editing branded content and commercials for over a decade now and by far the best part about this job is the endless randomness and variation of subject matter.
One day I'm knee-deep learning how a company pulls protein out of thin air, and the next, I'm geeking out over how those massive ceramic ovens work in some design factory. It's a total whirlwind, and you end up knowing a little bit about, well, everything. Not many gigs let you dive headfirst into how things are made, get totally obsessed for a hot minute, and then, poof, never think about it again.

This has equipped me with a mindset of logging any random event, conversation or thing I see as potential source material for me to have when I’m again being pulled into one of these explorations.
It’s also always an interesting, sometimes daunting, process to then figure out how this information should be translated to the desired audience in the form of a brand film, product demo, commercial, photography or any variation of b2b or b2c deliverables out there.
↗ Me trying to explain the shot to 25 extras in Hongkong without a common language.
Oh, and this job has also took me to 27 countries across the world, which in itself is eye opening and some of my all time best trips have been work related.
There are, obviously, also some negatives to this line of work—maybe I’ll do another write up on those at a later time.
3D printing
So I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Bambu Lab P1S! Been experimenting with it for the past two days and printing some off-the-shelf items to get the hang of it.
Been really enjoying the ease of use of this compared to a resin printer that I’ve used in the past; the ability of having four different filaments available at all times is so great.
We have some plans on creating some items for our upcoming Veli Studio shop and this printer will be perfect in doing R&D for that. More about the shop and my adventures on 3D printing coming later!
Bubbling under
🖥️ In the process of choosing the perfect 3D/CAD software for designing prints. All tips and recommendations welcome!
🧞♂️ We’re almost done with a re-do of our Veli Studio brand and website. Once again reminded that the last 10% takes as long as the first 90%. Very excited about it though!
Thanks for reading!
